For most people who do so, employing a nanny means becoming an employer for the first time, with the many legal obligations involved. It will also mean managing and motivating somebody who is in the vital position of looking after your nearest and dearest.

A nanny will be for the most part just like any other employee if you were in business. She (or he) will be entitled to full employment rights after one year in employment, which means maternity pay if she becomes pregnant and protection against unfair dismissal. She will also be entitled to a description of her duties.  For an example of a nanny contract register with Legalpulse return to this section of the site.

You will be responsible for her PAYE income tax and National Insurance. You may like to calculate this yourself or else you could use an agency such as Inkberry to do this for you for a fee. You may be surprised how much you have to pay. A recent article in a national newspaper focused on Guildford and suggested that ambulance drivers and nurses were being tempted away to become nannies. Nannies expect their pay to be net, that is after tax, which you pay. You may pay as much as £750 per month net and also provide a car in London or the South East.  £1,000 per month is not unknown and you may have to provide private medical cover as well and a flat or room in the house. If you supply a car, make sure your insurer is aware that your nanny is using it in the course of her duties. Some insurers are sensitive about this.

If you are going to spend that kind of money then a clear contract of employment, that explains duties and responsibilities, is essential.
